Poem in a the American River Review. Winner of Best in Nation award, First Place, Western Pacific Division, 1999.
Originally from Wasilla, Alaska, I am Shelby Rodriguez, a mom turned activist whose No More Tar Roofs Campaign won me not only a safe community in Antelope, California to raise my daughter Elise, but also the title of Healthy Child Healthy World's first ever Mom on a Mission in late 2009. My story was featured in People Magazine, Lifetime's Remarkable Women series, and is a highlighted story on the advocacy website Care2.
I hold a Bachelor's degree in English, and a Master's degree in education. I am a published poet, have written articles as a freelance writer, been a distinguished Perspectives Blogger on Dr. Greene's healthy parenting website, as well as a frequent blogger for Healthy Child Healthy World. I've also worked as an intern editor for Heckler Magazine, and for the monthly publication, Poetry Now. I have co-written a feature length screenplay, Mom on a Mission, based on my own true story, in addition to writing my first eco-adventure, a children's novel titled, Polly the Praying Mantis: A Bug, Bat, & Human Eco-Adventure.
As a mother, wife, activist, advocate, volunteer, educator, and writer, I was inspired to write this novel because one day a praying mantis made a home out of the morning glory growing from a wagon in our front yard. My daughter named her Polly and asked me so many questions about Polly, especially about what she eats. Because we are vegetarians the thought that Polly eats bugs for farmers prompted me to research praying mantises even more and lead me to the conflict I imagine would occur if I was supposed to fight and didn’t want to. The rest of the story flowed through me as if I was the person meant to share this with the world.
